An uninterruptible power supply is a backup battery for machines and computers for times when waiting for a generator to warm up isn't an option. Military and government agencies often employ the use of uninterruptible power supply batteries because of the sensitive nature of their work. When a machine's power is severed, the backup battery can last anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours, depending on the size of the battery. For normal office use, 15 to 20 minutes is sufficient time to keep the equipment going. However, a more robust uninterruptible power supply must be used in military equipment. The largest battery available for such a task can last approximately eight hours, which is sometimes necessary in emergency situations.
